We engaged JE Thurlby having been recommended them as one of a number of funeral directors suitable for a green burial for our baby boy.
Although the customer service we received from Sharon Thurlby seemed initially to be very sympathetic and going above and beyond the call of duty by visiting us in hospital for example, we were ultimately left disappointed;
We were told that a natural casket would be made by her father at no cost, however apparently they ran out of time and ended up buying a painted MDF casket with plastic nameplate and screw covers. We only discovered this on the day of the funeral when we saw it for the first time.
We asked them to purchase flowers on our behalf and were told that they had used a florist before for green bouquets. On the day of the funeral we discovered a cheap bouquet sitting in a plastic tray.
Following the funeral we were suddenly presented with a request for payment for the casket, parking and petrol for visits to the hospital and the cost of the flowers (the only expenditure we had approved). Being faced with a bill for over £300 for such poorly conceived items was very disappointing but when we questioned it the tone of the funeral directors changed considerably and became very defensive and rather aggresive given the subject matter at hand.
Ultimately we had to use some funds that we had intended on donating to neo-natal charities to cover their invoice.
We have fed this back to the green burial ground 'Brightwater' who were excellent and who we would thoroughly recommend.
Rob would not recommend J. E. Thurlby to friends.
